Shaaron Sanderson, the Citizenship coordinator at Lipson Community College, has been using Global News to support the conflict and consequences module of the KS4 Integrated Humanities course. As part of of this course, students looked at the question: Was the war with Iraq in 2003 a just war? With Year 9 Global News has been used to support work on conflict in the Middle East and the Have Your Say activity has been used when investigating climate change.

Year 9 have explored conflict in the Middle East, particularly focusing on the issue of conflict between the Palestinians and the Israelis and the issue of refugees. In one activity students worked in groups of four with each member responsible for one of four tasks:

1. Who are the Palestinians?
2. Where are the Palestinians
3. Why did the Palestinians become refugees?
4. What is the Intifada?

Members from each group responsible for each task researched these tasks together before each presenting their findings to their group of four.

When investigating climate change students used the BBC Have Your Say debate: How can the climate treaty be strengthened? They also used the Planet Under Pressure link from the same page. Using this selection of articles, comments and opinions on climate change students divided a page into four and labelled each section: Issues, Causes, Solutions, Opinions. They were asked to make brief notes from their research, placing information in the appropriate part of the grid.

Following this exercise students were asked to visit the Global News Students in action page and and select one action to highlight one of the research issues and two actions to follow through. They were then asked to present their action points to a group of six students.

Quote me on that!

"I really like the ideas on the students in action link. All research can be rounded off here. Encouraging individual participation is such a crucial element of citizenship".
Shaaron Sanderson, Citizenship coordinator, Lipson Community College.
