The majority of press and media tend to focus on a limited range of stories, particulalrly when reporting about people and places in the countries of the South. Many issues that are important or significant to communities in the South are often reported from a perspective which is biased or reinforces steroetypical views. Much remains unreported at all; many voices are unheard.
The following selection of news sources offer alternative perspectives on world events, people and places and provide a voice to those who are often silenced by the mass media.
AlterNet is a project of the Independent Media Institute, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting independent and alternative investigative journalism. It provides news and opinion and has an article database which has thousands of stories from over 200 sources.
Brazil Net provides educational information on social, environmental and cultural issues in Brazil and South America not normally covered by the mainstream media.
Indymedia UK is a network of independent and alternative media activists and organisations offering coverage of important social and political issues which often go unreported by the mass media.
New Internationalist is one of the leading monthly journals on global and development issues. It focuses on a different global theme each month and contains a vast archive on issues from global music and fashion to climate change and the role of the World Trade Organisation.
OneWorld.net is one of the world's leading alternative news services. Many of its reports come from development NGOs and charities and are produced from reporters living in the South. The service provides a voice for the world's poorest and most marginalised people.
